Hamilton Gallery Presents DOS-à-DOS: Two Book Artists, One Spine

Baltimore, Maryland—Beginning September 7 – 30, 2018, Hamilton Gallery will present DOS-à-DOS, a 2-woman book arts exhibit featuring works by Baltimore artists L. Nef’fahtiti Partlow-Myrick and Jenny O’Grady and a “maker space” with accordion and pop-up book projects for all ages. The opening reception for DOS-à-DOS and Hamilton Gallery’s September show will be held on Friday, September 7 from 6 pm – 9 pm at 5502 Harford Rd., Baltimore, MD 21214. An artists reception for members of the Hamilton Arts Collective along with Myrick and O’Grady will also be held at Hamilton Gallery on Sunday, September 16 from 1 pm – 3 pm.

The traditional Dos-à-Dos bookbinding technique features two individual text blocks bound by a single, shared spine. For Myrick and O’Grady, their shared spine is the Creative Writing and Publishing Arts MFA program at the University of Baltimore, where under the eye of program director Kendra Kopelke they grew into their voices as artists and writers. Myrick creates books of all sizes using paper, wood, metal, tile and anything she can affix to a page, while O’Grady makes tiny books from paper, beans, fabric, Sculpey, and whatever else strikes her fancy.

This exhibit will highlight the work of both artists – who take joy in turning traditional book arts forms upside down – while also allowing visitors to take part in the creative acts of book arts, and honoring Kopelke’s vision as a teacher with a collaborative “Exquisite Kendra” sculptural piece, created over the course of four months by Myrick and O’Grady in the tradition of the Exquisite Corpse.

This exhibit will be unique to Baltimore, as the book arts scene is just emerging. For more information, contact Peggy Hoffman at
